At Slate, Jillian Goodman asks, where are all the female cultural critics?
We didn't catch it in time for our big preview, but Kazuo Ishiguro's forthcoming novel The Buried Giant, now has an official U.S. release date of March 2015. The novel is the author's first in 10 years, and his British publisher says it will be about "lost memories, love, revenge and war."

Ben Lerner has a story [subscription required] in this week's New Yorker that, like his debut novel Leaving the Atocha Station, features a protagonist named The Author. The magazine interviewed Lerner about the invitation to blur his fiction with his autobiography. He says that his work in an exercise in "activating those questions in peculiar ways—but the questions, not the answers, are what strike me as interesting."
"The internet teems with writerly advice, almost all of which suggests that creativity is served best by monasticism, a quiet life filled with pencils—but that kind of advice seems to take a very short view of history, overlooking the one classic way to rouse the capricious Muses: sexually transmitted disease." According to The Hairpin, maybe it's not an MFA you need, just syphilis. After all, it seems to have worked for James Joyce, Baudelaire, Flaubert, Oscar Wilde and many, many others.

There were women, certainly, but they felt like cardboard cut-outs, something to move around, admire, shift gently out of the way when necessary.
