Book to movie news: Soon to hit theaters is a big-screen take on Allen Ginsburg’s Howl, focusing on the obscenity trial Ginsberg faced after the publication of the poem and starring James Franco as Ginsberg (alongside Jon Hamm and Jeff Daniels). (The trailer). The film includes an animation of the poem itself by illustrator Eric Drooker. Art from the animation has been collected in a new book under the title Howl: A Graphic Novel.

    James Franco is probably a fine young actor and will probably do a fine job as Mr. Alan Ginsburg, but I wish we could have a Gay Man play Mr. Ginsburg. I’m sure all we will hear about in the press will be, ‘was it icky to kiss your male co-star?’ and lines to that effect.

    Franco just did go through the TRAUMA, supposedly of letting us all in on his straight man ways. But man, we aren’t looking for a straight man is all I can say. Time to grow up, right?
